Bitlis prepares to be the capital of pumice
BITLIS - Turkiye’s Bitlis is preparing to become the capital of the pumice, opening to the world market with the pumice mine that has reached the extinction point in other countries.
The Pumice mine is located only in Greece, Italy and Turkiye all over the world, but it has almost reached the point of exhaustion in two countries outside Turkiye.
In Turkiye, extract pumice mine from the ground is available in Isparta, Erciyes, Afyon and Nevsehir, but 70 percent of the pumice reserves are found in Bitlis. The pumice mine, which is described as “white gold” and consumed in other countries, is exported from Bitlis to other countries and provinces.
Pumice, which is mainly used as defense material, construction, textile, chemistry and cosmetics sectors, is mainly used in insulation systems in constructions in Turkiye.
Cengiz Şahin, Vice President of the Tatvan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Civil Engineers Bitlis Branch, stated that they want Bitlis to be the capital of the pumice, and said, “70% of the pumice and perlite reserves in Turkiye are located in Bitlis. We will be able to produce high value-added products, and we will only talk about pumice and perlite in 2017 to form awareness.”
“We aim to contribute to economy and employment”
Şahin complained that they could not operationalize these rich mining reserves in Bitlis and said: “We have rich perlite mines here. Unfortunately we have not been able to operationalize these mines in the year 2017. There are only samples taken from certain points related to our perlite mines. We only know that we have quality perlite within those samples. But we do not want to have them underground, we make workshops to transform them into high value-added products in Bitlis, both in terms of industry and employment.” (ILKHA)
