“We are working in the field at summer time while fasting”
MARDIN - The Syrian father and son, who had fled from the war in their countries and came to Mardin, stated that they are working on the field as fasting to provide for their livelihood.
The Bekir family, who settled in Mardin's Kızıltepe village of Yaylım (Şefelor village) by fleeing from the war in Syria, is trying to maintain their livelihood by working in the summer in the field as they are fasting.
Ibrahim Bekir, 58, the family father said that Allah helps the fasting people, emphasized the importance of human will in this case.
“We came here from Syria Dirbêsiyê 3 years ago. We have 3 boys, 3 daughters, totally a family with 8 members. We are trying to live by watering the field. It is hard to work when we fast but we have no other possibility. We are doing our work and also we do our fast [worship]. Allah is helping us, we need to be strong. We have to work and fast together. Fasting is not effortless. As Ali said, ‘one of the things I enjoy in the world is to fast in the summer heat.’”
Speaking that cotton watering lasted until September, Bekir gave the information that they gathered after drying the cotton swab they had been waiting for since September.
Gernaz Ibrahim, 18, who works in the field with his father, said that they are working in fasting for stand on our own legs.
Ibrahim said, “I am helping my father in watering the field. We have to work. Some of our friends say, ‘the weather is very hot, we cannot fast.’ We are fasting, but we are both doing our work, and fasting. If man fasts, Allah will help him. We are fled from the war. To stand on our own feed, we work in this hot time of summer while we fast.” (Mehmet Aslan - ILKHA)
