A center of Religious Tourism for the region; Pool of Abraham

Pool of Abraham is still the most attractive place flooded with visitors which is located in the south west of the city is known as the place where Prophet Abraham was catapulted into.

Mevlid-i Halil Mosque built on the place of Saint Mary Church of Byzantine period and Rizvaniye Mosque an Ottoman architecture in the compound which is believed that Prophet Abraham was born in, are thronged by people at the time of daily prayers. There are also the graves of master Bediuzzaman (Said-i Kurdi), Mullah Buluntu and Mullah Abdulkadir Badilli who was a student of Bediuzaman.

There is an interesting folk tale about the lake Ayn Zeliha just beside the Pool of Abraham which is flood with thousands of visitors every year. Rumor has it that; Abraham who struggled against idols which had been worshipped by Nimrod and his people, was catapulted into fire by Nimrod from the hill where the current place of Urfa Castle was built. At this time as it is told by Quran, Allah orders “O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham”. Over this command according to some rumors the fire turned into a bed of roses, and to some other rumors fire turned into water while the wood turned into fish.

The point Prophet Abraham fell is called lake of Halil-ur Rahman. To the rumors; daughter of Nimrod Zeliha who believed in Abraham’s creed threw herself to the fire just after Him and there appeared a lake named pool of Zeliha.

People of Sanliurfa especially after noon prayers, go the lake with some food prepared at their home and traditional beverage of tea, there they have their meals while the foreign tourists take photos either with groups or on their own. (ILKHA)
