The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Meteor Astronomer Dr. Peter Jenniskens visited Saricicek village in Bingol province to reinvestigate the meteorite which fell there a while ago. Doc. Dr. Ozan Unsalan from Istanbul University, Science Faculty of Physics, Atom and Molecule Physics and authorities from Bingol University also joined the investigation.

The investigation team took away some of the meteors they found to investigate it in the laboratory.

“All the parts have different features”

Meteor Astronomer Dr. Peter Jenniskens reported that 9 meteor parts were found during the investigation, “The meteors found previously by the villagers were also sent to us. We are currently investigating the number of meteors fallen on the earth as a result of the explosion. All the parts we have found so far have different features. We don’t know the weight of the meteor and we are currently investigating on this.”

Dr. Jenniskens also stated that this type of event has only happened 16 times across the entire world and this explosion in Bingol is the 17th one.

“We can learn two things from the meteorite in Saricicek” said Dr. Jenniskens, “Firstly, the small parts fallen off the big asteroid will give us details about the asteroid. It will give us information about how it fell on earth? Where and which orbit did it come from? We can also find out how it came into the atmosphere and how it exploded. This meteor in Bingol is smaller than the one which fell in Russia 3 years ago.”

“Secondly, we can benefit from this explosion in terms of the origin and basis of the solar system. Meteorites gives us details on the formation of planets and the solar system. We will be able to find out a lot about the solar system”, said Dr. Jenniskens.

Dr. Jenniskens responded to the question of whether there is a system which warns us before a meteor explosion as “We currently don’t have a system like that but we are working on this matter.”

Professor Doctor Iskender Demirkol, member of education in Bingol University who also joined the investigation process stated that there will be a result at the end of the investigation. (ILKHA)
