"20 million people receive basic religious knowledge through hearsay"

MARDIN - Stating that 20 million people receive basic religious information through hearsay, which put them in trouble, Head of Religious Affairs Dr. Ali Erbaş said, "We have to convey the correct religious information to our people."

Paying a visit to Mardin province governor, Erbaş said they visited nearly 20 provinces in this context until now, "We are trying to reach all parts of our nation as much as possible."

"Religion is the cement of our nation. We know that the path of peace and the best way to live is unity and solidarity. Without any ethnic discrimination, we embrace our young people, especially our children, and we are in an effort on how we can prepare them for the future in a more qualified way," he said.

Governor Mustafa Yaman also expressed his satisfaction with the visit, underlined that Mardin is a multilingual and multicultural city, and living together adds cultural richness to the city.

After his visit to Mardin's governor, Head of Diyanet went to Mardin Artuklu University and met with Rector Dr. Ahmet Ağırakça. Later he participated in the program held in Mardin mufti office.

Speaking here, Erbaş sharing a public opinion survey: "When people in the street were asked 'where did you get the basic religious information?' 15 percent answered as they learned from Imam Hatip High School and the faculties of theology.

"That is, the percentage of those who receive formal religious education is 15 percent," he added. "So, where does the other 85 percent get religious education?" he asked.

Stating that 50 percent of the population learn basic religious information from summer Qur'an Courses while the other 50 percent receive from hearsay, Erbaş said: "It is at least 20 million people."

"We will further develop our cooperation"

Noting that they will develop cooperation of Imam Hatip high schools with universities, Erbaş said, "We will further develop the cooperation of especially Imam Hatip High Schools with theology faculties. We will work together. (M. Salih Keskin - ILKHA)
